More Than We Can Repay

May 8, 2016 Leave a Comment

All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my mother. -Abraham Lincoln

How do you properly honor a mother?  What can you say?  What can you do in order to show the proper respect and appreciation for a person who loves deeply and unconditionally for a lifetime?  For 101 years now, our country has stopped on the second Sunday of May in order to address those questions.

On Mother’s Day we honor our mothers in many ways – with flowers, with cards, with chocolate, with flowers, with letters, with crafts, with creative gift ideas, with flowers, and presumably a thousand other gift ideas from Pinterest – but it seems that the most simple and profound way that we can show our true appreciation to our mothers is by attempting to return the same unconditional love and acceptance that they show to us.  It’s really all that we can do.

As much as we might try, as much as we might plan, as creative as we might be with our gifts, we can never really expect to repay our mothers in full for all that they have done for us.  The care they showed for us when we weren’t able to care for ourselves is more than we can repay.  The guidance and advice that they have given to us through the years is more than we can repay.  The countless hours and sleepless nights they spent on our behalf is more than we can repay. The selflessness. The kindness. The toughness. The tenderness. The wisdom. The love of a godly mother is simply more than we can ever hope to repay.

But we can still try.  We can use our gifts, our words, and our actions every single day in an attempt to show our deepest appreciation and highest honor to the mothers and motherly figures in our lives.
