What makes you happy in life? Not just ‘crack-a-smile’ happy. What makes you truly, deeply, fully happy and satisfied? Scottish writer Alexander Chalmers once made the claim that “a person only needs 3 things to be truly happy in this world: someone to love, something to do, and something to hope for.” Chalmers made this comment about 200 years ago and it seems to be true now maybe more than ever. Turn on your radio. Turn on your television. Go to a bookstore. You’ll find millions of songs, movies, television shows and novels all centered on the same three concepts: love, purpose and hope. Many people spend their entire lifetime searching for these three things and, sadly, many never find all three.
The good news is that there is something out there that can satisfy all three of these basic needs: our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Someone to love. There is no one more deserving of our love than Jesus. No one could ever show us the same amount of love that He showed us by “emptying Himself and taking on the form of a servant. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross” (Phil. 2:7-8).
Something to do. Disciples of Christ have the absolute most fulfilling purpose in life: to serve Christ. In Christ our lives have meaning. We seek to follow after the example that we have in Christ in the hopes that we might save those who do not know Christ. Simply put, we strive to “fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.”
Something to hope for. What greater hope could there be than the hope of the resurrection? Hope of the resurrection can provide comfort and peace even in the most terrifying of circumstances here on earth because we know beyond any doubt that we will live with Christ forever! What greater hope could we possibly strive toward?
As Christians, we most certainly have someone to love, something to do, and something to hope for.
