Last Sunday morning’s sermon was on “Excuses.”  Try this: Write the following items in a column on the left-hand side of a sheet of paper.

    Worship
    Giving
    Family ties
    Encouraging others
    Helping those in need
    Evangelism
    Bible study
    Breaking sinful habits

Now, evaluate your performance in each of these areas.  If you are lacking in any or all of these areas, on the right-hand side of the paper write the excuses that you have made to avoid changing. Evaluate your excuses.  Will God accept these?  If not, decide to change!

Sunday night we continued our series on “My Prayers in the Psalms,” talking about “A Prayer for Friendship with God.”  Practice the prayer that we studied from Psalm 25, working in these four elements:

    1. Stated trust (vv. 1-3)
    2. A pledge of openness (vv. 4-5, 8-9, 12-14)
    3. A plea for forgiveness (vv. 6-7, 11, 18)
    4. A request for deliverance (vv. 16-19)

This Sunday is Involvement Sunday, the day on which we will launch our new program of work and challenge every Christian at Ashville Road to get involved.

Our elders, deacons, and ministers have been working very hard over the last two months to develop a plan of work that will facilitate growth in our congregation. During this Sunday’s worship service, we will explain this plan of work and tell the members how they can get involved, using their special interests and talents.

Both the Ministries Booklet that explains our work and the response sheet that will be used to process the members’ commitments can be downloaded from our Web site.

Want to know if the church of Christ was in existence prior to the Restoration Movement in America? Go to Traces of the Kingdom. Keith Sisman has compiled an impressive amount of historical evidence tracing the church of Christ into Great Britain and Europe before the nineteenth century.

Help is needed with the preparations for our upcoming lectureship.  This Friday at 6:00 PM, men are needed to help set up the fellowship hall with tables and chairs.  Also, we are providing lunch on both days of the lectureship.  This means our families must bring enough food for everybody, including visitors to be served.  On Saturday we will be serving soup and sandwiches, and on Sunday we will have a pot luck meal.

This year’s lectureship concentrates on “Why We Sing.” Topics include “Fairest Lord Jesus,” “Some Stories about Hymn Writers,” and “Amazing Grace.” Sunday ends with a special session on “Why the Churches of Christ do not use Instruments of Music in Worship.” Speakers include Stan Mitchell of Freed-Hardeman University, Kyle Butt of Apologetics Press, Andy Kizer who preaches for the Ninth Ave. Church of Christ, and Ben Wright who is with the West Walker church in Jasper.

The lectureship is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, the weekend of January 20-21. Lunch is provided on both days. Lectures begin at 9:00 AM.
