This is the week! Our Spring Barbeque is this Saturday at 5 p.m. Thanks to Joe Schultz, the meat will be provided, but we’re asking everyone to bring sides, drinks and desserts to go with it. If you have kids, bring them a little early that afternoon. There will be activities for all ages. Ashville Road’s Spring Barbeque is an annual tradition that is guaranteed to be a lot of fun. I hope to see you there!

We have a rather lengthy prayer list for this week.

    • Rodney Denson is home from a brief hospital stay. He will have to undergo more tests to find out why his blood count has been low.
    • Maliea Box is recovering from a partial knee replacement surgery at St Vincent’s downtown.
    • Joann Johnston had eye surgery today.
    • Keep Virginia Guthrie, Carolyn Braden, Shirley Key (Reba Oglesby’s mother), and Logan Parker (Roy and Melba Peppers’s nephew) in your prayers.
    • Also, don’t forget our honeymooners! Neil and Hannah Hillis are in Rome, and Andrew and Ashley Noles are also traveling following their wedding.

Welcome Cole Lyons into the world! He is the brand new baby boy of Adam and Mauri Lyons. Proud grandparents are Dennis and Ann Lyons. Cole was born a little after 5 p.m. yesterday and weighed 6 lbs., 13 oz.

This was a sad week in that we bid farewell to two of our young families, the Dockerys and the McKenzies. We will really miss them and hope they can visit us in the future from time to time.

As we have announced, this Sunday’s contribution will go towards paying down the debt on our Fellowship Wing. The elders have decided that each Fifth Sunday contribution will serve this purpose. Our Sunday morning worship numbers have been running high over the last few weeks, and if we do not do something soon, we will outgrow our already cramped facilities. If God continues to bless us with growth, we will need to expand our auditorium. However, we cannot do that until we reduce our current debt. It may be hard to get excited about paying down debt on a building, but managing our finances is part of doing God’s work in a physical world. We’re asking our families to give generously and cheerfully this Sunday so that we can move forward with these future plans.

Vacation Bible School is a little more than a week away. You know what that means…hard work! Some of our ladies have already been working hard in preparation for VBS. If you haven’t pitched in yet, there are still several opportunities. The next workday is next Tuesday at 10 a.m. Also, the Saturday prior to VBS (June 5), we will spend the entire day getting things ready. Don’t forget to send out those invitations. VBS will take place Sunday, June 6, through Thursday, June 10, starting at 7 p.m.

Our Spring Series continues tomorrow night with Brandon Renfroe who preaches for the Ashville congregation just north of here. Brandon has spoken on this series once before and many of you told me to invite him again. His topic is “The Unity of the Spirit” from Ephesians 4:1-3. Our theme is “Passages that Make Churches Grow.”

Dear Brothers and Sisters at Ashville Road,

This week’s update is a couple of days late due to illness at the Kizer house. Jackson and I have been under the weather, but we’re feeling better today, and since there are still several days until we get back together again on Sunday, I thought it would still be good to send out a message to everyone at Ashville Road.

Our gospel meeting concluded last night with Steve Higginbotham. Thanks to all who prepared food for Sunday’s fellowship meal, as well as those who fed Steve before the weeknight services. I think everyone who came will agree that Steve did an excellent job. If you didn’t get a chance to hear Steve, or if you just want to hear him again, sign up for a CD or download his lessons on www.arcoc.com/listen.

Let me say thank you one more time for the surprise gift you gave our family last Sunday in commemoration of our tenth anniversary. We were truly overwhelmed by the way that you honored us and feel so blessed to be with such a thoughtful and loving congregation.

This Sunday is Neil and Hannah’s wedding shower from 2 to 4 p.m. in the fellowship hall. Neil and Hannah do so much for our congregation. Let’s be sure to encourage them as they prepare for their life together.

Remember our sick, especially Virginia Guthrie, who is undergoing rehabilitation at the Village and Allison Odom, who was hospitalized again because of Chron’s disease.

Floyd Johnston will be coming home from the hospital soon following a serious heart operation. He is in Lecil and Jeanne Evans’s Care Group. If you can prepare a meal for the Johnstons once they get home, please contact Lecil or Jeanne and let them know.

This Sunday night the teens will be going to the Area-Wide Youth Series at Logan Martin. Stan Mann will be driving the van, which will leave the building at 4:30.

This Wednesday night, our Spring Series continues with my father-in-law, Charles Cochran. He will be sharing yet another passage contributing to church growth, 1 Kings 18. Please make every effort to be there. You won’t regret it!

One last thing. I’m trying to put together a team for the “Men Who Cook” contest benefitting underprivileged young people in our community. The contest will be held at the new Leeds Middle School on May 8. I need men who can help me cook a few dishes and serve them at the contest. If you’re interested, send me an email, or let me know in person.

Sunday will be a busy day for Neil, as he will be preaching in my absence while I am away preaching a meeting in Greenwood, Mississippi. The preacher at Greenwood is a friend of mine from college, Nathan Segars. I look forward to working with these brethren, but there’s no place like home! I’ll be back April 25 and look forward being back home with my church family and doing Q&A Sunday night.

Dear Brothers and Sisters at Ashville Road,

I hope you are enjoying the warm spring weather this week.  By now most of you have mowed your lawn at least once.  Some of you are planting vegetable gardens.  The bees are busy now that the flowers are in bloom, and the morning greets us with birdsong.  I think we can all agree that we are glad winter is over.

Remember to pray for our sick this week.  Some special needs include:

    • Jeff Taggart, who will have his gall bladder removed tomorrow at Trinity.
    • Carolyn Braden, who is undergoing chemotherapy for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
    • Allison Odom—it was good to see Allison at church Sunday.  She is slowly making improvement.
    • Virginia Guthrie, who has been undergoing rehabilitation at the Village in Cook Springs.
    • Floyd Johnston, who is scheduled to have a heart operation on April 14.

Our Wednesday night Spring Series begins tomorrow night!  The theme is “Passages that Make Churches Grow.”  Tim Hayes is our first guest, and the text he has selected is Psalm 119:1-8; his lesson is entitled, “Learn, Love and Live.”  Our Wednesday night attendance lately has left much to be desired.  This is an opportunity for some of you to get back in the groove.  The days are longer, which should make travel easier.  Also, there are classes for small children, so parents can enjoy a period of Bible study without the distractions they are accustomed to.  Let’s support this year’s series so that together we may learn how God wants us to contribute to the growth of the body of Christ!

Our Gospel Meeting starts this Sunday.  Our guest is Steve Higginbotham, who preaches for the Karns church in Knoxville, TN.  Steve is a great communicator of the gospel, and we are looking forward to his coming.  Sunday’s morning services will be followed by a fellowship meal and an early 1 p.m. service.  There will be no 6 p.m. service.  Due to this arrangement, there will be no care group meetings for the month of April, nor will there be a Care and Share fellowship that night.  We’ll pick back up with our visitation meetings in May.  In the meantime, group leaders will see to it that the needs of their group members are not overlooked.  The remaining services of our gospel meeting will continue Monday-Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m.

Everyone is invited to the Bridal Tea for Neil and Hannah on April 18 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the fellowship hall.  Hannah is registered at Target, Bed, Bath & Beyond, and Belk.  If you would like to make a monetary contribution to a group gift, please see Jackie Phillips or Sara Dockery.

Let me share with you an opportunity to do something for our community and bring some exposure to our congregation.  The Robert R. Moton Alumni Association is hosting a “Men Who Cook Contest” on May 8 at the Leeds Middle School from 3 to 6 p.m.  The event is a fundraiser to raise money for scholarships that go to underprivileged young people that have graduated in the Leeds school system.  To enter, we need a team of men who can donate prepared food which will be submitted to a competition in which first, second, and third place certificates will be awarded to the winning teams, to be decided by a popular vote of patrons attending the event.  The team must also decorate a table for the event, which we can use as advertising for our church, and serve the food that afternoon.  If you are interested in being on the team, contact me.  I know that many of you guys can cook, so don’t let me down!

Finally, a new set of Truth for Today commentaries has arrived on the book of Job by Don Shackelford.  If you are interested in a copy, they are $30 each.  Make checks payable to the Ashville Road Church of Christ.

    See you Wednesday!

Dear Brothers and Sisters at Ashville Road,

The lazy months of 2010 are officially over. March and April are full of special events and opportunities, so pay attention. You won’t want to miss out on the action!

First, some news regarding our sick:
    • Virginia Guthrie was discharged from Saint Vincent’s East last Friday and is now at home
    • Allison Odom was discharged from UAB Monday
    • Millie Layton is slowly coming back from pneumonia
    • Carolyn Braden had her first chemotherapy treatment for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma Monday
    • Floyd Johnston will have an operation on his heart April 14

Please pray for our sick through the week. If I missed somebody, please email that information to the office so that we can get it in our prayer list for tomorrow night.

Speaking of Wednesday night, tomorrow night is our Quarterly Singing. We’re trying something new this year with these singings. Instead of taking requests, we are building a service around a theme that employs Scripture reading, prayer, and song. Tomorrow night’s theme is “God’s Love.” I still need some volunteers to make this work, so if you can participate, please send me an email letting me know if you want to read scripture, lead a prayer, or lead a song.

This weekend is the Lads to Leaders/Leaderettes Convention in Atlanta. Our kids have been working very hard to prepare for this event, and we are very proud of them. Don’t forget that if you’re riding the van, it will leave the church parking lot no later than 6:30 Friday morning. The group plans to come back Sunday morning from the convention to be at Ashville Road in time for Bible class. Please pray for our youngsters as they go on this trip, and be sure to tell them what a good job they are doing.

Sunday night the teens will have a devotional at Richard and Maliea Box’s house. Listen to the announcements Sunday for more details.

Our Gospel Meeting starts in less than two weeks (April 11-14). We appreciate everyone who showed up at the work day last Saturday to prepare the building. Our guest is Steve Higginbotham, who preaches for the Karns church in Knoxville, TN. Steve is a great communicator of the gospel, and we are looking forward to his coming. This is a great opportunity to introduce friends to the gospel. Now’s the time to start sending out invitations. Let’s work hard to make this another great gospel meeting.

On the Sunday of the meeting, April 11, we will have a fellowship meal directly following our morning services and then have an early 1:00 p.m. service in lieu of our usual 6:00 p.m. service. We’ve used this formula several times in the past on Fifth Sundays. Due to this arrangement, there will be no care group meetings for the month of April, nor will there be a Care and Share fellowship that night. We’ll pick back up with our visitation meetings in May. Group leaders, this means you may need to evaluate your group’s needs outside of the meetings. Don’t forget that all meals for those in need are now being coordinated through these groups.

For Monday through Wednesday night, I’m looking for volunteers who will have Steve into their home for supper prior to the services for each night. Please let me know if you’re interested.

I have a new set of Truth for Today Commentaries. These are scholarly but accessible commentaries on biblical books written by brethren. This time it’s Job by Don Shackelford. If you are interested in a copy, they are $30 a piece. Make checks payable to the Ashville Rd. Church of Christ.

I promise I will not ask this again: I’m still looking for folks who will open their homes up to some brethren from Kentucky who will be here April 24-25. Please let me know if you can do this. I still need beds for four guys.

    See you Wednesday night!

Dear Brothers and Sisters at Ashville Road,

This is our second attempt to send out a mid-week update to keep our members informed on the news at Ashville Road. We hope these updates are helpful. Please let us know if you do not want to receive them. Also, help us keep our email list updated by sending new or corrected email addresses to the church office.

Several folks have been under the weather this week. Vivian Ledingham went home from UAB yesterday. Millie Layton had a brief stay at Brookwood Hospital due to pneumonia, but we’re thankful to report that she was able to go home today. Also, Virginia Guthrie remains in Saint Vincent’s East, room 538. Carolyn Braden begins chemotherapy next week for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Teri Dunn and Allison Odom are also suffering from health problems. Please keep these in your prayers.

Tomorrow night is our last normal Wednesday of the quarter. Next week will be singing night, but we’re breaking from the tradition we have normally followed. In the past, singing night has been a night when we begin by taking requests and then our song leaders take turns leading us in the songs that have been requesting. We’re going to try something new, starting next Wednesday, by engaging in an orderly service that combines singing, Scripture, and prayer. The theme will be “God’s Love.” The service will be modeled after the services we customarily conduct on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. If any of you men would like to help in this service by leading singing, reading a scripture, or saying a prayer, you can volunteer by responding to this email or just seeing me at services.

This Saturday the teens will treat our congregation to breakfast at 8 a.m. Following that we will have a workday to clean up our building, inside and out. Be here if you can. It is important for us to keep our facilities looking nice.

The Lads to Leaders/Leaderettes Convention is fast approaching: April 2-3. Our young people have been working hard at song leading, speech, Bible Bowl, and other events designed to train them to be spiritual leaders. Next Sunday there are two very important meetings for those involved in this program. Young people are asked to come at 4 p.m. to work on the Banner. Everyone needs to bring a picture of himself or herself, preferably a head shot. At 5 p.m. we’ll have our final meeting before convention. We’re very proud of the work they are doing.

Our gospel meeting is just a few weeks away. Brother Steve Higginbotham from Knoxville, TN, will be our speaker on April 11-14. Mark your calendars, and invite a friend!

Sunday evening following our services our young people, sixth grade and below, will enjoy fingers foods (provided by the parents) and an Easter egg hunt. We are asking our members to donate plastic eggs filled with treats for the egg hunt. Please place your donations in the box in the foyer. If you have any questions, please speak to Neil Hillis or Sara Dockery.

In the last update I sent, I mentioned a request made by some brethren in Kentucky who will be in town April 24-25 for the races at Talladega. They are looking for Christians who will give them a place to sleep while they are in town. If you can do this, let me know. We’re expecting eight men.

That’s all for now. See you Wednesday!

    Drew
