    Today is Purpose Sunday, the day on which we, as a congregation, will purpose our giving for 2009.  This exercise helps the elders plan the church budget for the New Year, but it goes even deeper than that, challenging us to fulfill an important Christian obligation.

    Paul writes, “So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Cor. 9:7, NKJV).  Another translation renders Paul’s words, “Each one must give as he has made up his mind” (ESV).  Purpose Sunday challenges us to make up our minds about giving.  This obligation should be done deliberately and cheerfully, not flippantly and with little thought.
