The Lord’s church is doing good works, and, hopefully, we’re working as hard as we always have. A single, average congregation of the Lord’s church participates in evangelistic campaigns, church retreats, foreign missions, friendship evangelism, and fellowship opportunities. But with the mindset to work and the single greatest news known to man as our message, why isn’t Christianity flourishing throughout the world? It might be because we wrestle with the task of prayer.
There are some talents and skills one doesn’t necessarily need in order to pray: a strong voice, a degree in Bible, years of experience in Christian living, and a dynamic personality. What one truly needs is a pure heart (Psa. 66:18, 19), faith (Mt. 21:22), and for his prayers to be according to God’s will (1 Jn. 5:14). In fact, Jesus taught, “Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it” (Jn. 14:13, 14). Every Christian is not talented to perform each task to be done in the body of Christ, but everyone has the ability of prayer – without exception.
We have a need today for more elders, deacons, preachers, youth ministers, song leaders, and missionaries in the churches of Christ. Moreover, we desperately need more Christians who are deeply devoted to the discipline of daily prayer. As one man put it, “The least gifted person can become a master in prayer, because prayer requires only an intense desire to spend time with God.” The most powerful act a Christian can commit for his church is to find a quiet moment in the day to pray to the Father.
